The Chamber, DeKalb County CEO’s Office and Local School Systems To Award $65,000 in Scholarships To High Achieving Students
(Atlanta, GA – May 1, 2014)
The DeKalb Chamber of Commerce in partnership with DeKalb County Interim CEO Lee May, DeKalb County School District, and City Schools of Decatur will award $65,000 to local high school students through the Educational Scholarship Fund: an established initiative created in 2013.
The fund will award multiple scholarships in amounts up to $5,000 to DeKalb County high school seniors who have been accepted into a two or four year college. Scholarships will be awarded to 24 students based on their financial need and merit.
“This is a golden opportunity for us to make the greatest investment money can buy: An investment in our future. We can make a difference by ensuring our brightest and or best get the higher education that today’s business climate demands. By making this contribution, businesses will be giving back to the communities they serve,” says Interim CEO Lee May.
A selection committee formed by the DeKalb Chamber reviewed the applications. The CEO, DeKalb County School District Superintendent, and Chamber will announce the awards at a May 6 ceremony for students, parents, and sponsors at the Porter Sanford Performing Arts and Community Center in Decatur.
The DeKalb Chamber of Commerce Foundation will serve as the fiscal agent that allows all contributions to be tax deductible.
“There is a direct correlation to scholastic achievement in communities where business is involved in education. It is through the efforts of many businesses and corporate citizens that 24 students will be able to attend the college of their choice this fall,” says DeKalb Chamber President Leonardo McClarty.
The mission of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce is to support members in the growth of their business and stimulate the local economy through education, public policy, and economic development. The DeKalb Chamber leads collaborative initiatives among business leadership, economic development interests, and elected officials in DeKalb County, Georgia.
